A Classic Hand-Launched Glider for the Next Generation of Builders
Our Sparrow is a simple, hand-launched glider that also is the perfect way to introduce new modelers to the art of building and flying model aircraft. It's another in our Schoolyard series - a kit you can easily frame up in just a weekend, and once completed, enjoy at a local schoolyard or park.
Specifically designed with beginners in mind, this 28-inch wingspan glider kit is built from lightweight balsa and lite-ply. It goes together quickly and doesn’t require a workshop full of tools. In fact, most novice builders can assemble it with only basic hobby supplies, making it an excellent project for kids, classrooms, clubs, or anyone new to aeromodeling. The illustrated manual is straightforward, the airframe is easy to understand, and the entire model can typically be completed in just a few hours—perfect for a weekend or an afternoon build session.
Despite its simplicity, the Sparrow teaches valuable model-building fundamentals. Assembling the airframe gives beginners hands-on experience with some of the same techniques used in larger and more advanced aircraft kits, helping new builders develop confidence and skills they’ll use on future projects.
Once built, the Sparrow can be covered with modern iron-on covering films for durability and bright colors, or go with traditional tissue covering for a more vintage look and finish. Either approach results in a lightweight glider that looks as good as it flies.
A particularly clever feature of the Sparrow is its adjustable tailboom system. During initial test flights, the tailboom can be manually positioned by sliding it in or out of the fuselage, allowing the builder to easily fine-tune the model’s balance and glide performance. When the perfect glide slope is achieved, the tailboom can then be glued permanently in place, locking in that ideal setup for consistent, smooth flights.
The wing is removable, held on by rubber bands, making it easy to transport and store the finished Sparrow.
The Sparrow loves a calm day — give it light to no wind, and it's at its best. Strong gusts, though? Not its thing. To launch it, just toss the Sparrow like you’re aiming a dart at a bullseye. Keep it level, give it a confident throw, and watch it cruise well past 50 feet. The vertical fin even lets you set in a little left or right rudder, so you can choose between a straight shot or a smooth, graceful curve. Play around with how much power you put into your throw and you’ll quickly discover just how impressively this little flyer can glide. It’s basically an invitation to experiment.
Lightweight, quick to build, and wonderfully educational, the Sparrow is more than just a small glider — it’s a gateway into traditional model aircraft building, giving new aeromodelers the confidence and experience to take on bigger, more advanced projects in the future.
